Bottom Line: Sacrifice fuels life. Greed fuels death.

Acts of the Apostles 4:36-37 NLT
For instance, there was Joseph, the one the apostles nicknamed Barnabas (which means “Son of Encouragement”). He was from the tribe of Levi and came from the island of Cyprus. He sold a field he owned and brought the money to the apostles.

All-in sacrifice multiplies the mission.

Acts of the Apostles 5:1-6 NLT
But there was a certain man named Ananias who, with his wife, Sapphira, sold some property. He brought part of the money to the apostles, claiming it was the full amount. With his wife’s consent, he kept the rest. Then Peter said, “Ananias, why have you let Satan fill your heart? You lied to the Holy Spirit, and you kept some of the money for yourself. The property was yours to sell or not sell, as you wished. And after selling it, the money was also yours to give away. How could you do a thing like this? You weren’t lying to us but to God!” As soon as Ananias heard these words, he fell to the floor and died. Everyone who heard about it was terrified. Then some young men got up, wrapped him in a sheet, and took him out and buried him.

Greed is rooted in dishonesty.

Acts of the Apostles 5:7-11 NLT
About three hours later his wife came in, not knowing what had happened. Peter asked her, “Was this the price you and your husband received for your land?” “Yes,” she replied, “that was the price.” And Peter said, “How could the two of you even think of conspiring to test the Spirit of the Lord like this? The young men who buried your husband are just outside the door, and they will carry you out, too.” Instantly, she fell to the floor and died. When the young men came in and saw that she was dead, they carried her out and buried her beside her husband. Great fear gripped the entire church and everyone else who heard what had happened.

Greed multiplies greed.

Acts of the Apostles 5:12-14 NLT
The apostles were performing many miraculous signs and wonders among the people. And all the believers were meeting regularly at the Temple in the area known as Solomon’s Colonnade. But no one else dared to join them, even though all the people had high regard for them. Yet more and more people believed and were brought to the Lord—crowds of both men and women.

The mission will not be stopped.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

START TALKING:

What choices that may have seemed insignificant or inconsequential at the time led you to living where you live with who you live with and doing what you do? Trace it back as far as you can, including the choices others made that ultimately led you here.

START THINKING:

Read Acts 4:36-37 and 5:1-11.
What is the compare and contrast that Luke, the author of Acts, is making with these two examples?

In Acts 5:1-11, what role does spiritual warfare play in the story? How could it seem that it was personal offense being highlighted rather than the reality of spiritual warfare?

Read Ephesians 6:12.
How does this verse help to understand the major truth of Acts 5:1-11?

What sins are exposed in this story? Why do you think God responded in the way He did to this? How did this serve to purify and warn the early church?

START SHARING:

How have you experienced all-in sacrifice multiplying the mission? What sacrifice did others make so that you could know Jesus? How have you seen your own sacrifice multiply the mission and lead others to know Jesus?

How have you seen greed be rooted in dishonesty and multiply greed in others? What choices are made when you are greedy versus the choices you make when you sacrifice?

START DOING:

What are you willing to sacrifice to fuel the mission? What will you have to give up that you love in order to sacrifice?

How will this sacrifice allow you to experience the Gospel? How does your sacrifice make you like Jesus and his sacrifice for you, even if it pales in comparison to the cross?

START PRAYING:

Pray for each other in the micro church, for our church as a whole, and for the Church in our nation to be united in mission. Pray for each of us to be rooted in the Gospel and God's word first and foremost, full of both truth and grace. Pray that we would all be willing to sacrifice so that the flame can be fueled, not just for our family, friends, and neighbors now, but also for those in the generations to come.

  - How can you be intentional this week with people where you live, work, and play to have spiritual/missional conversations if the opportunity arises?
  - Who in your life do you think could be disciple-able or open to spiritual/missional conversations?
