BOTTOM LINE: Momentum propels me through the ups and downs.
Hebrews 12:1 NLT
1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us.
Our momentum is building from the momentum that came before.
Hebrews 12:1 NLT
1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us.
Sin is a momentum killer.
Hebrews 12:1 NLT
1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us.
Marathon momentum goes further than sprint momentum.
Hebrews 12:2-4 NLT
2 We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne. 3 Think of all the hostility he endured from sinful people; then you won’t become weary and give up. 4 After all, you have not yet given your lives in your struggle against sin.
Jesus is the fuel for momentum.

START TALKING
In your everyday, real life, when have you experienced the power of literal momentum propelling you or something through ups and downs? When have you needed literal momentum to get you over a hump or to help you push through something?
START THINKING
Scan through the list of faith examples in Hebrews 11. Which ones are your favorite or most speak to you? What are some of the incredible results of faith that are listed here?
Based on what you just read and discussed from Hebrews 11, what does the first part of Hebrews 12:1 mean for you? What is the momentum principle that you can build upon?
The second thought of Hebrews 12:1 deals with the weight of sin and how it slows down momentum. What are other examples from the Bible - people and stories - where sin killed or slowed spiritual momentum?
START SHARING
Read Isaiah 59:2. How does this verse explain what the Hebrews writer calls a "weight" in describing sin and how it stops spiritual momentum?
When have you experienced sin slowing down momentum for you or someone you know? It may not be the "big failure" sins we often focus on as it could be the more hidden sins that we may call "mistakes" or even downplay as not sin at all (pride, greed, deceit, etc.).
Hebrews 12:1 uses the picture of a marathon to describe what running the "race of life" with Jesus is like. When have you experienced "sprints" or "bursts" of spiritual momentum only to feel like it came to an end? If you understood your spiritual life as a marathon rather than a sprint, how would the bursts propel you through the more difficult times rather than becoming a discouragement?
START DOING
Read Hebrews 12:2-4. This passage tells us that the way we run this race is by keeping our eyes on Jesus - the champion - and letting Him set the pace. What are some practical steps you can do this week to keep your eyes on Jesus and to let Him set the pace?
We are promised in this passage that if we remind ourselves of the hostility that He endured, we won't grow weary or give up. When you find yourself feeling persecuted or struggling with your faith, what can you do to think about this? How do you think it would help you recalibrate your faith and gain a better perspective?
When you think about living on mission this week so that people around you can see Jesus through your life and hear your own story and testimony, how can you make this part of the story you tell? Practice sharing examples from your own life of when life was hard and you were able to focus on Jesus to let him set the pace and get you through.
START PRAYING
Each person in the microchurch share where you believe you are in terms of your momentum in this marathon race of spiritual life. Share what you sense the Spirit is leading you to do this week to throw off the weight of sin and to keep your eyes on Jesus. Then pray for each other to grow in your faith and gain momentum in such a way that not only do you experience Jesus more than ever before but also so that others around you will have their faith initiated or grown as a result of your story.

MULTIPLICATION
Share spiritual/missional conversations you've had where you live, work, and play:
- Who did you have a conversation with that took a spiritual/missional turn this week?
- What questions did you ask to discover where God is at work in their life, even if they are not aware?
- How were you able to share your story of life change or how you have experienced Jesus?
- How can you be intentional this week with people where you live, work, and play to have spiritual/missional conversations if the opportunity arises?
- Who in your life do you think could be disciple-able or open to spiritual/missional conversations?

WHAT'S NEXT?
- Discuss the next step for your micro church. When will we gather again, and which purpose will it fulfill (missions, fellowship/care, growth, worship, multiplication)?/giveback/giveback
