Bottom Line: Coming to Jesus requires me to be more than an observer.

Luke 2:8-12 NLT
That night there were shepherds staying in the fields nearby, guarding their flocks of sheep.Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared among them, and the radiance of the Lord’s glory surrounded them. They were terrifiedbut the angel reassured them. “Don’t be afraid!” he said. “I bring you good news that will bring great joy to all people. The Savior—yes, the Messiah, the Lord—has been born today in Bethlehem, the city of David! And you will recognize him by this sign: You will find a baby wrapped snugly in strips of cloth, lying in a manger.”

1. Overcoming fears.

Luke 2:13-15 NLT
Suddenly, the angel was joined by a vast host of others—the armies of heaven—praising God and saying“Glory to God in highest heaven, and peace on earth to those with whom God is pleased.”When the angels had returned to heaven, the shepherds said to each other, “Let’s go to Bethlehem! Let’s see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”

2. Total trust.

Luke 2:16 NLT
They hurried to the village and found Mary and Joseph. And there was the baby, lying in the manger.

3. Sacrifice.

Luke 2:17-19 NLT
After seeing him, the shepherds told everyone what had happened and what the angel had said to them about this child. All who heard the shepherds’ story were astonishedbut Mary kept all these things in her heart and thought about them often.

4. Spread the word.

Luke 2:20 NLT
The shepherds went back to their flocks, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen. It was just as the angel had told them.

5. Life-long worship.

START TALKING
What travel do you do at Christmas? What all is required for you to make that possible? Or think about those who travel to come see you. What is required of them to make that possible?

START THINKING
Read Luke 2:8-12.
If you had never heard this story and really think about it, what are parts of this story that would seem odd or unusual?

What questions would you ask to make sense of this story?

START SHARING
When you first came to faith or even as you walk through growing your faith, what fears did you or do you have to deal with?

Read Luke 2:15-16.
The shepherds had total trust and immediately did whatever it took - sacrifice - to come to Jesus. What was your experience or is your experience of this? What have you had to give Jesus total trust and control over? What have you had to sacrifice?

Read Luke 2:17-20.
The story concludes with the shepherds talking to Jesus and about Jesus every where that they live, work, and play. What are often your greatest distractions to doing this? Which one is harder or easier for you: talking to Jesus or talking about Jesus?

START DOING
What do you sense the Spirit leading you to do this week as a result of this message. Which of the following five steps will you take so that you will come to Jesus as more than just an observer?

- Overcoming fears
- Total trust
- Sacrifice
- Spread the word
- Life-long worship

What can you prepare to sacrifice so that you can give your biggest gift to Jesus through the Big ReGift Christmas offering? How will this help you also be part of spreading the word?

START PRAYING
Pray for each person in the microchurch to be respond to the coming of Jesus by living lives that come to worship, sacrifice, give, and obey. Pray that each of us do not simply go through the steps of tradition this Christmas, but respond to the coming of Immanuel by coming to him in response!

MULTIPLICATION

Share spiritual/missional conversations you've had where you live, work, and play:
  - Who did you have a conversation with that took a spiritual/missional turn this week?
  - What questions did you ask to discover where God is at work in their life, even if they are not aware?
  - How were you able to share your story of life change or how you have experienced Jesus?
  - How can you be intentional this week with people where you live, work, and play to have spiritual/missional conversations if the opportunity arises?
  - Who in your life do you think could be disciple-able or open to spiritual/missional conversations?
