Bottom Line: Who I am is more important than what I do

1 Corinthians 1:26 NLT
Remember, dear brothers and sisters, that few of you were wise in the world’s eyes or powerful or wealthy when God called you.

Who I was before Jesus doesn't matter because it's not who I am now.

1 Corinthians 1:27-29 NLT
Instead, God chose things the world considers foolish in order to shame those who think they are wise. And he chose things that are powerless to shame those who are powerful.God chose things despised by the world, things counted as nothing at all, and used them to bring to nothing what the world considers important. As a result, no one can ever boast in the presence of God.

Who God chooses is different than who the world chooses.

1 Corinthians 1:30 NLT
God has united you with Christ Jesus. For our benefit God made him to be wisdom itself. Christ made us right with God; he made us pure and holy, and he freed us from sin.

Who I am with Jesus looks completely different.

START TALKING:
We talked about how we can do all the right things but still not be who God is calling us to be. Real change starts with who we are in Christ.

Discussion Starters:
What’s something in your life that you used to do, but it didn’t reflect who you truly were?
Can you think of a time when someone saw something in you that you didn’t see in yourself?

START THINKING:
Read: 1 Corinthians 1:26–30
“Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called…”

Questions:
Paul reminds us who we were when we were called. Why do you think he starts there?

What does this tell us about the kind of people God chooses and values?

Why is it important to understand our past identity before we understand our calling?

START SHARING:
This passage flips the script on how we think about value and purpose.

Read again: 1 Corinthians 1:26–30
“Not many of you were wise… influential… of noble birth. But God chose the foolish... the weak...”

Discussion:
Have you ever felt like you weren’t “enough” for God to use you? How does this passage speak to that?

What are some ways the world defines people by what they do? How does this passage challenge that?

Paul says, “But God chose…” What do you think that means for your own life and story?

“It is because of Him that you are in Christ Jesus…”How does being “in Christ” change your sense of identity?

How has Jesus redefined your understanding of wisdom, strength, or success?

START DOING:
God doesn’t wait for us to get it all together—He chooses us as we are, and then transforms who we are.

Challenge Questions:
Based on 1 Corinthians 1:26–30, how should your understanding of calling change?

What’s one area of your identity that Jesus is transforming right now?

How can you live this week in a way that reflects who you are in Christ, not just what you do?

Personal Reflection:
Fill in the blank:
“I used to believe I had to ________________ to be used by God. But now I see that God has chosen me because ________________.”

START PRAYING:
Group Prayer Focus:
Thank God for choosing us even when we felt unqualified, unseen, or unworthy.

Pray that we would root our identity in Christ, not in our performance.
Ask for boldness to live as people who are being transformed from the inside out.

Pray for each person to grow into who God has called them to be—and trust that the doing will follow.

? “Jesus, thank You for calling us not based on our achievements but based on Your love. Transform our identity to look more like Yours, and help us live from a place of grace, not performance.”

  - How were you able to share your story of life change or how you have experienced Jesus?
  - How can you be intentional this week with people where you live, work, and play to have spiritual/missional conversations if the opportunity arises?
  - Who in your life do you think could be disciple-able or open to spiritual/missional conversations?
