SERMON NOTES & DISCUSSION

Hebrews 3:7-9 NLT
7 That is why the Holy Spirit says,“Today when you hear his voice, 8 don’t harden your hearts as Israel did when they rebelled, when they tested me in the wilderness. 9 There your ancestors tested and tried my patience, even though they saw my miracles for forty years.

BOTTOM LINE: Listening for the Spirit's voice drowns out the enemy's voice.

1 Corinthians 2:11-12 NLT
11 No one can know a person’s thoughts except that person’s own spirit, and no one can know God’s thoughts except God’s own Spirit. 12 And we have received God’s Spirit (not the world’s spirit), so we can know the wonderful things God has freely given us.

1. The stronger the relationship, the clearer the voice.

2 Corinthians 12:8-9 NIV
8 Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. 9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.

2. Listen for His words.

Acts of the Apostles 8:26 NLT
26 As for Philip, an angel of the Lord said to him, “Go south down the desert road that runs from Jerusalem to Gaza.”

Acts of the Apostles 8:29 NLT
29 The Holy Spirit said to Philip, “Go over and walk along beside the carriage.”

Acts of the Apostles 16:6-10 NLT
6 Next Paul and Silas traveled through the area of Phrygia and Galatia, because the Holy Spirit had prevented them from preaching the word in the province of Asia at that time. 7 Then coming to the borders of Mysia, they headed north for the province of Bithynia, but again the Spirit of Jesus did not allow them to go there. 8 So instead, they went on through Mysia to the seaport of Troas. 9 That night Paul had a vision: A man from Macedonia in northern Greece was standing there, pleading with him, “Come over to Macedonia and help us!” 10 So we decided to leave for Macedonia at once, having concluded that God was calling us to preach the Good News there.

3. Listen for His nudges.

How do I know?
A - Affirming
B - Biblical
C - Christlike

Two Questions to Ask Every Moment:

What is the Spirit saying?
What am I going to do about it?

Start Talking
What is a voice or a sound that you have learned to hear even if other people can't hear it, and when have you been able to that above the noise of the crowd or when you really needed to hear it? How long did it take you to get to know that voice or sound so well, and what did you do to learn that sound so well?

Start Thinking
Read Hebrews 3:7-9. When is the Holy Spirit speaking? In this context, what does it mean to "harden your heart"? What would have been different if the Israelites had listened to the Spirit's voice? How would they have been able to say no to the enemy if they had? (Hint: skim through Exodus 20 and Exodus 32 for one example, or share your own!)

1 Corinthians 2:11-12. How would you put this passage into your own words, or how would you explain this to someone else? What is the promise that we have in this passage? Why is that such a big deal?

Start Sharing
Read 2 Corinthians 12:8-9. When have you had an experience like Paul where you have begged God to do something for you or to change something for you spiritually? Did you hear the Spirit's voice? If so, what did you sense the Spirit telling you? If not, why do you think you didn't hear?

In Acts 16:6-10, the Holy Spirit spoke through "nudges" and situations. When have you experienced this? What were the nudges you felt? If you followed the Spirit in that situation, what was the result of your experience? Maybe you didn't follow at the time because you didn't realize it was the Spirit. Looking back on that situation, what do you now realize the Holy Spirit was saying to you?

Start Doing
If the voice becomes clearer when the relationship is stronger, what can you do to get to know the Father better?

What does hearing the Spirit's voice in your life sound like or feel like? How can you be more sensitive to and aware of what the Spirit is leading you to do and what the Spirit is speaking to you?

Either take a moment as a micro church to pray and listen, or think about your time with the Spirit over the past week and answer these two questions:

What is the Holy Spirit saying to you or leading you to do?
What are you going to do about it?

Start Praying
Practice praying together what you discussed in the previous section!

MULTIPLICATION
Share spiritual/missional conversations you've had where you live, work, and play:

  • Who did you have a conversation with that took a spiritual/missional turn this week?
  • What questions did you ask to discover where God is at work in their life, even if they are not aware?
  • How were you able to share your story of life change or how you have experienced Jesus?
  • How can you be intentional this week with people where you live, work, and play to have spiritual/missional conversations if the opportunity arises?
  • Who in your life do you think could be discipleable or open to spiritual/missional conversations?

WHAT'S NEXT?
Discuss the next step for your micro church. When will we gather again, and which purpose will it fulfill (missions, fellowship/care, growth, worship, multiplication)?
