SERMON NOTES & DISCUSSION

BOTTOM LINE: What I can't see is so much bigger than what I can see.

Ephesians 6:10-11 NLT
10 A final word: Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil.

1. There's a war trying to destroy me.

Ephesians 6:12 NLT
12 For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.

2. The enemy is not what I can see. The enemy is what I can't see.

Ephesians 6:13 NLT
13 Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm.

3. Always be preparing for battle even when I can't see it coming.

Ephesians 6:14-18 NLT
14 Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness. 15 For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared. 16 In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil. 17 Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18 Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.

The Unseen One is the one who will fight and win.

Start Talking
When have you experienced something or been part of something where what couldn't be seen was bigger than what could be seen? Maybe it was a problem you had to solve, or an event or organization you were part of. What could be seen from the outside? What could only be seen behind the scenes that was much bigger and more involved?

Start Thinking
Read Ephesians 6:10-11. Why do you think the word "armor" is used for getting prepared for the "strategies" of the devil?

What do you think the "strategies" of the devil are? What other verses come to mind or can you find that show what some of those strategies are? (Hint: use a concordance, youversion.com, or the Bible App to search "the devil" or "satan" to see what you might find)

Start Sharing
Read Ephesians 6:12. When have you found yourself in a battle that felt like it was against flesh-and-blood? Maybe it was against someone else or maybe it was an internal battle within yourself. How did you experience that the real battle wasn't flesh-and-blood but against an unseen enemy of evil and darkness? How would understanding this (or how did understanding that) help you to stand strong when the battle comes? How will this help you let the Spirit guide you through the battle?

What kind of attack are you most prone to experience? What seems to be the attack - or the strategies - that the enemy uses the most against you?

Start Doing
Read Ephesians 6:14-18. What can you do to prepare now for the battle that you are in or that is coming?

How will you "pray in the Spirit" at all times and at all occasions this week? How can you practice listening to the Spirit as you do?

Who will you be praying for as you are persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere?

MULTIPLICATION
Share spiritual/missional conversations you've had where you live, work, and play:

  • Who did you have a conversation with that took a spiritual/missional turn this week?
  • What questions did you ask to discover where God is at work in their life, even if they are not aware?
  • How were you able to share your story of life change or how you have experienced Jesus?
  • How can you be intentional this week with people where you live, work, and play to have spiritual/missional conversations if the opportunity arises?
  • Who in your life do you think could be discipleable or open to spiritual/missional conversations?
