SERMON NOTES & DISCUSSION

BOTTOM LINE:
Victory or defeat is determined by what leads me.

Galatians 5:16-25 NLT
16 So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves. 17 The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions. 18 But when you are directed by the Spirit, you are not under obligation to the law of Moses. 19 When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division, 21 envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these. Let me tell you again, as I have before, that anyone living that sort of life will not inherit the Kingdom of God. 22 But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things! 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature to his cross and crucified them there. 25 Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives.

1. When the Spirit leads, the Spirit fights for me.

2. When I lead, I lose.

3. When the Spirit leads, I win.

4. The Spirit leads when I rest in His promises.

Start Talking

When have you experienced that succeeding or failing depended on who or what you followed? When did following your way not work, but following a better way worked?

Start Thinking

Read Galatians 5:16. What is the promise found in this verse? Why does being led by the Holy Spirit make it impossible for you to do what the sinful nature desires? How would you put this in your own words and explain it to someone else?

Read John 14:26 and Romans 8:26. What do these verses teach us are the some of the roles of the Holy Spirit? With this in mind, what will being led by the Holy Spirit be like? What would you experience?

Start Sharing

Read Galatians 5:17-18. When have you experienced the different desires at war within you? When you followed Jesus and experienced the Holy Spirit at work in your life, what did you first notice or what did you notice the most about how your desires changed?

Read Galatians 5:19-23. This passage is not a list of dos and don'ts. Instead, it is a list of ways that we can see what - or who - is leading us based on what comes out of our lives. How have you experienced this? When you have been led by the Spirit, which fruit of the Spirit have you noticed the most being supernatural and not of your own doing?

Share how you have experienced each of the following below. How did you know it was happening? How would you help someone new to faith understand this and be able to identify it in their own life?

Start Doing

Read Galatians 5:24-25. How can each of us nail the passions and desires of the sinful nature to the cross? In a real-world scenario, what might that look like?

What can you do this week to follow the Spirit's leading in every part of your life? What are examples that come to mind where you can do what Rodney challenged, and pause to ask the Holy Spirit to lead you?

MULTIPLICATION

Share spiritual/missional conversations you've had where you live, work, and play:

  • Who did you have a conversation with that took a spiritual/missional turn this week?
  • What questions did you ask to discover where God is at work in their life, even if they are not aware?
  • How were you able to share your story of life change or how you have experienced Jesus?
  • How can you be intentional this week with people where you live, work, and play to have spiritual/missional conversations if the opportunity arises?
  • Who in your life do you think could be discipleable or open to spiritual/missional conversations?
