SERMON NOTES & DISCUSSION

Bottom Line: Getting to know the author transforms me more than knowing all about the author.

Joshua 1:8 NLT
8 Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do.

Meditation turns information into transformation.

How do I meditate?

1. Ask for help.
John 14:26But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.

2. Focus on one word at a time.
Psalm 119:15I meditate on your precepts and consider your ways.

3. Pray the verse.
Psalm 19:14But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.

Pleasing the author comes naturally when I know the author.

Blessing is the natural result of knowing the author and doing what pleases Him.

Start Talking
What is an example of something or someone that you knew information about, but when you really got to know it or them everything changed? It actually made sense? Everything clicked?

Start Thinking
Read Joshua 1:8. What do you think are the big differences between studying and meditating on something? What is the difference between studying the Bible and meditating on it?

How do you think meditating on the Bible every day - not just studying it - will naturally lead you to do what it says and naturally lead you to pleasing the Author?

How is blessing the result of meditating on the Bible and doing what it says? When have you experienced this in a real way when you did something that you saw in scripture?

Start Sharing
Read the following verse out loud over and over as a group, and emphasize the bolded word. How does that change the meaning for you? How does it help you get to know the Author better?

Psalm 25:8
The Lord is good and does what is right; he shows the proper path to those who go astray.
Psalm 25:8
The Lord is good and does what is right; he shows the proper path to those who go astray.
Psalm 25:8
The Lord is good and does what is right; he shows the proper path to those who go astray.
Psalm 25:8
The Lord is good and does what is right; he shows the proper path to those who go astray.
Psalm 25:8
The Lord is good and does what is right; he shows the proper path to those who go astray.
Psalm 25:8
The Lord is good and does what is right; he shows the proper path to those who go astray.

Start Doing
After meditating on the verse above as a micro church, what do as an individual you sense the Holy Spirit telling you to do or obey? How would you pray that verse back to God?

What was most helpful for you from this discussion on how to meditate on God's word when you read the Bible? How are you going to apply this over the course of the next few days?

If someone asked you why you read the Bible, with this discussion in mind, what would you say? What is one personal story of how it made a difference in your life that you would share with them?

MULTIPLICATION
Share spiritual/missional conversations you've had where you live, work, and play:

Who did you have a conversation with that took a spiritual/missional turn this week?
What questions did you ask to discover where God is at work in their life, even if they are not aware?
How were you able to share your story of life change or how you have experienced Jesus?
How can you be intentional this week with people where you live, work, and play to have spiritual/missional conversations if the opportunity arises?
Who in your life do you think could be discipleable or open to spiritual/missional conversations?

WHAT'S NEXT?
Discuss the next step for your micro church. When will we gather again, and which purpose will it fulfill (missions, fellowship/care, growth, worship, multiplication)?
