SERMON NOTES & DISCUSSION
Could it be that we have thought that the role of the church was self improvement?
Matthew 16:13 NIV
13 When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?”
Matthew 16:17-20 NIV
17 Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven. 18 And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” 20 Then he ordered his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah.
Jesus defines the term ekklesia with the church.
The term Ekklesia/Church is a combination of two words:
Ek - To go out from - leave.
Kaleo - To be identified – to set and establish direction/calling – to be summoned or called on to the ROCK.
Matthew 16:21-23 NLT
21 From then on Jesus began to tell his disciples plainly that it was necessary for him to go to Jerusalem, and that he would suffer many terrible things at the hands of the elders, the leading priests, and the teachers of religious law. He would be killed, but on the third day he would be raised from the dead. 22 But Peter took him aside and began to reprimand him for saying such things. “Heaven forbid, Lord,” he said. “This will never happen to you!” 23 Jesus turned to Peter and said, “Get away from me, Satan! You are a dangerous trap to me. You are seeing things merely from a human point of view, not from God’s.”
Matthew 16:24-26 NIV
24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. 25 For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it. 26 What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?
Matthew 16:17-20 NIV
17 Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven. 18 And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” 20 Then he ordered his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah.

Start Talking
What is the most monumental thing you’ve ever been a part of or seen? Maybe you didn’t realize it was a big deal at the time.
Name things that are old (other than earth/sky/creation)? How many years did they last? Were they less than 2,000 years old (the age of the church) and counting?
Start Thinking
The disciples couldn’t have had a clue that they were a part of something you would be a part of 2,000 years later. What do you think they would have said if they understood the gravity of the launching of the church?
Why do you think that Jesus chose this moment in history to introduce the church to his followers?
Start Sharing
It is interesting that Jesus chose the word ekklesia or "called out” to name his movement. Why do you think he picked the two words, “called" and "going out" to make a name for what He launched? Why are "calling and going" important to make a church for Jesus?
What did Jesus promise about the church in Matthew 16:18?
What authority did Jesus give to those who would be in His church in Matthew 16:19?
Start Doing
How will you live differently as a “called out” disciple this week? How will that change the way you interact with people where you live, work, and play?
What kind of conversation can you have this week about what you have discovered from this sermon?
Start Praying
Guided prayer time:
1. Ask the Spirit to reveal to you what His calling on your life looks like.
(KALEO-CALLING)
2. Ask the Spirit to replace your previous cultural view of the church with
the Father's view of His church.
3. Ask the Spirit to reveal who is discipleable around you. And ask for the
courage to share what He is doing in your life on this topic. (EK-
OUTWARD VISION)

What questions did you ask to discover where God is at work in their life, even if they are not aware?
How were you able to share your story of life change or how you have experienced Jesus?
How can you be intentional this week with people where you live, work, and play to have spiritual/missional conversations if the opportunity arises?
Who in your life do you think could be discipleable or open to spiritual/missional conversations?

WHAT'S NEXT?
Discuss the next step for your micro church. When will we gather again, and which purpose will it fulfill (missions, fellowship/care, growth, worship, multiplication)?
