SERMON NOTES & DISCUSSION

Discussion Break - Start Talking
When have you joined something as a member that was simply based on signing up for it or based on a promise to do something in the future rather than a history of commitment or experience?

How much ownership and connection did you feel? Was it easy or hard to walk away from that membership? Why?

When have you joined something because of a shared commitment that required a track record of commitment or experience? How did you experience that this was different than the previous examples? Was it easy or hard to walk away from that membership? Why?

Bottom Line: True members are bought in members.

Numbers 1:1-4 NLT
1 A year after Israel’s departure from Egypt, the Lord spoke to Moses in the Tabernacle in the wilderness of Sinai. On the first day of the second month of that year he said, 2 “From the whole community of Israel, record the names of all the warriors by their clans and families. List all the men 3 twenty years old or older who are able to go to war. You and Aaron must register the troops, 4 and you will be assisted by one family leader from each tribe.

Numbers 1:3 NLT
3 twenty years old or older who are able to go to war. You and Aaron must register the troops,

1. The list identifies who is ready for battle.

Numbers 1:2-3 NLT
2 “From the whole community of Israel, record the names of all the warriors by their clans and families. List all the men 3 twenty years old or older who are able to go to war. You and Aaron must register the troops,

2. Members on the list are able to go into battle.

3. Members who are able have shown a commitment and shown they are ready for battle.

A local church is an individual, identifiable, and accountable group of believers committed to each other and their shared mission.

Discussion Break - Start Thinking
Why do you think God wanted Moses and Aaron to actually register the members of the army on a list? What would have been challenging or even impossible to do if there had not been a list?

Why do you think God told them to only register those who were able rather than anyone who wanted to be members of the Army? How much harder would this have been if they had to do it a year earlier rather than a year after being freed from Egypt and beginning their journey as a new nation?

The members of this army were identified as already being part of the community and already able to function as a member. How is this similar to identifying the members of the following: a flock (1 Peter 5:2), the parts of a body (1 Corinthians 12:27), and the members of a family (1 Timothy 3:15)?

Discussion Break - Start Sharing
Identifying members at OneLife means simply "registering" those who have already shown they are on mission, just like Moses "registered" those who had shown they were already ready and able to be on mission. How are you on mission with OneLife's calling to see people far from God discover Jesus and how their one life can make a difference? Specifically, how do:

- Experience Jesus?
- Give Jesus your best?
- Don't do life alone?
- Multiply like Jesus?

(See the link above - onelifeknox.com/membership - for a description of what we mean when we say each of those four statements.)
Which of those four above is most natural for you? Which do you struggle with the most?

How do you think this annual process of identifying our members based on the above can help you in your own journey and spiritual development?

MULTIPLICATION

Share spiritual/missional conversations you've had where you live, work, and play:

  • Who did you have a conversation with that took a spiritual/missional turn this week?
  • What questions did you ask to discover where God is at work in their life, even if they are not aware?
  • How were you able to share your story of life change or how you have experienced Jesus?
  • How can you be intentional this week with people where you live, work, and play to have spiritual/missional conversations if the opportunity arises?
  • Who in your life do you think could be discipleable or open to spiritual/missional conversations?

WHAT'S NEXT?

Discuss the next step for your micro church. When will we gather again, and which purpose will it fulfill (missions, fellowship/care, growth, worship, multiplication)?
