Bottom Line: An Experience with Jesus gives me a story to tell

John 4:16-18 NLT
“Go and get your husband,” Jesus told her.“I don’t have a husband,” the woman replied. Jesus said, “You’re right! You don’t have a husbandfor you have had five husbands, and you aren’t even married to the man you’re living with now. You certainly spoke the truth!”

1. Experience Jesus

John 4:19-20 NLT
“Sir,” the woman said, “you must be a prophet. So tell me, why is it that you Jews insist that Jerusalem is the only place of worship, while we Samaritans claim it is here at Mount Gerizim, where our ancestors worshiped?”

2. Religion hijacks the experience

John 4:25-26 NLT
The woman said, “I know the Messiah is coming—the one who is called Christ. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.”Then Jesus told her, “I AM the Messiah!”

3. Jesus reveals himself personally when I experience him

John 4:28-29 NLT
The woman left her water jar beside the well and ran back to the village, telling everyone“Come and see a man who told me everything I ever did! Could he possibly be the Messiah?”

4. I’ll never have all the answers about this experience

John 4:30 NLT
So the people came streaming from the village to see him.

John 4:39-42 NLT
Many Samaritans from the village believed in Jesus because the woman had said, “He told me everything I ever did!”When they came out to see him, they begged him to stay in their village. So he stayed for two dayslong enough for many more to hear his message and believe. Then they said to the woman, “Now we believe, not just because of what you told us, but because we have heard him ourselves. Now we know that he is indeed the Savior of the world.”

5. My experience with Jesus and telling my story will cause others to have an experience and a story to tell

START TALKING (Break the Ice):
We’ve all had experiences that impacted us so deeply, we couldn’t stop talking about them—a trip, a movie, a concert, or even something spiritual.

Question: What’s a personal experience you've had that changed your perspective or your behavior? Why did it impact you so much?

START THINKING (Dig Into Scripture and Truth):
Read John 4:17–26
This moment between Jesus and the Samaritan woman turns personal—Jesus speaks into her real story, not just surface-level religion.

Question: Why do you think Jesus shifted from general truths to calling out something so specific in her life? What does that tell us about how He wants to work in our lives?

Question: How would you feel if Jesus confronted you in the same way? How do you think she felt?

START SHARING (Make It Personal):
Read John 4:27–30
The woman leaves her water jar—something ordinary and essential—and runs to tell others about her experience.

Question: What does it say about her encounter with Jesus that she left what she was doing and immediately went to tell others?

Question: What are you still “carrying” that might be keeping you from fully stepping into your experience with Jesus or sharing your story?

Read John 4:31–38
The disciples are focused on the physical—food. Jesus redirects their attention to something eternal.

Question: How can we be like the disciples, distracted by physical needs when spiritual opportunities are right in front of us?

Question: How have you seen God use your story—or someone else’s—to impact others for eternity?

Read John 4:39–40
The woman’s story leads to a spiritual movement in her village. Others came to Jesus because of her experience.

Question: What part of her story do you think made people want to meet Jesus for themselves?

Question: Who in your life needs to hear your story? What’s stopping you from sharing it?

START DOING (Live It Out):
If an experience with Jesus gives us a story to tell...

Questions:
- How can your life show that you've truly encountered Jesus?
- What specific step will you take this week to share your experience with someone?
- WHO is your "One"—the person you're praying for and ready to invite into an experience with Jesus?

START PRAYING (Connect with God):

Take time to pray for:

- A deeper, personal experience with Jesus for everyone in the group.
- Boldness to share our stories, even if they feel unfinished.
- Eyes to see spiritual opportunities in everyday moments.
God to prepare the hearts of those who will hear your story and meet Jesus because of it.

MULTIPLICATION

Share spiritual/missional conversations you've had where you live, work, and play:
  - Who did you have a conversation with that took a spiritual/missional turn this week?
  - What questions did you ask to discover where God is at work in their life, even if they are not aware?
  - How were you able to share your story of life change or how you have experienced Jesus?
  - How can you be intentional this week with people where you live, work, and play to have spiritual/missional conversations if the opportunity arises?
  - Who in your life do you think could be disciple-able or open to spiritual/missional conversations?
